The House of Worth was known for making dresses not only for the ball season of the rich and famous, but also garments for costume balls, which were very popular at the time. All the major fashion houses of the time did this. This “gown” that we are presenting here today is one such garment. A very popular figure at the time was the Queen of Sheba.
The Queen of Sheba is a biblical figure who is said to have made a journey to King Solomon's court in Jerusalem in the 10th century BC. The queen learns of King Solomon's wisdom and arrives at his court in Jerusalem to verify what she has heard. Overwhelmed by what she sees, she gives him “one hundred and twenty talents of gold and a great deal of spices and precious stones”.
The dress is made of gray silk and decorated with darts at the edges. The long sleeves are fastened with three buttons each. Pink silk is used on the cuffs and on the inside of the top. Manufacturer's label at the waist.
The dress is adorned with original pieces of jewelry from the period: a crown with a veil, a pearl necklace, a necklace (round element with rhinestones, hanging element with rhinestones and pearls in the shape of drops) and a wide necklace (hanging stone, different coloured stones, yellow metal). Wide lamé belt decorated with rhinestone rosettes. The matching red shoes with a curved toe complete the ensemble.
