This light‑coloured FITU corset from England, dating to the 1910s, is a beautifully preserved example of early 20th‑century Figureform design and high‑quality British corsetry craftsmanship. The corset carries the original label “Figureform – Qual. Special – Made in Britain”, a marking that is notably uncommon on textiles of this period. FITU was known for producing supportive, health‑focused corsetry, and the Figureform line in particular emphasised anatomical shaping, posture support, and a naturally elongated silhouette—qualities clearly reflected in the construction of this piece.
Made in a refined, lightly structured style, the corset is hooked at the front and laced at the back, allowing for precise adjustment and a historically accurate fit. The garment once featured suspenders, which were later removed, a typical alteration for corsets that continued to be worn into the interwar years. Despite its age, the corset remains in very good condition, showing only subtle marks and minimal signs of wear.
The presence of the Made in Britain label adds historical significance. Originating from the Merchandise Marks Act of 1887, such labels were introduced to protect domestic industry during a period of intense competition—particularly against rapidly advancing German manufacturing. While intended to promote patriotic buying, the act inadvertently elevated the reputation of foreign goods, especially those marked “Made in Germany.” In contrast, “Made in Britain” appears far less frequently on garments, making this corset an especially interesting example of early 20th‑century British textile identity.
A rare and collectible piece for enthusiasts of historical fashion, vintage lingerie, and museum‑quality British corsetry.
