Courtly Rococo Portraits of an Aristocratic Couple, Vienna, 18th Century — attributed to Johann Michael Militz (1725–1779)
These two refined 18th‑century portraits depict an aristocratic couple dressed in courtly Rococo fashion, the type of luxurious attire worn at the Viennese court. As specialists in historical dress, we can confirm that such high‑status garments were reserved for members of the nobility, indicating that this was a prominent couple of significant rank. Their exact identities have unfortunately been lost to time, yet their elegant presence and the quality of execution speak unmistakably of noble heritage. The paintings remained in our private collection for many years and are now ready to find a new home.
The female portrait shows a young noblewoman wearing an elaborately embroidered turquoise silk gown, enriched with fine lace, fur trimming, and pearl jewellery. The artist captures the shimmering textures and delicate details typical of Rococo court dress. Oil on canvas, 55 × 45.5 cm, unsigned, unframed.
The male portrait presents a young aristocrat in gleaming cuirass armour, featuring a decorated shoulder section, a golden undergarment with lace cuff, pale blue sleeve accents, and silver brocade embroidery. Oil on canvas, 56 × 45 cm, unsigned, unframed.
The stylistic features correspond to the work of the Austrian Old Master Johann Michael Militz (1725–1779), to whom the painting is attributed.
Although little is known about his life, Johann Michael Militz was clearly a Viennese portrait specialist trained in the Meytens school, active among the Austrian nobility and producing works significant enough to be engraved and circulated. His surviving oeuvre suggests a painter skilled in aristocratic portraiture, military subjects, and courtly representation.
Together, these works form a rare pair of 18th‑century Austrian Rococo portraits, ideal for collectors of courtly art, aristocratic family paintings, and Viennese cultural history.
