Bonnets with a clear connection to Germany have become increasingly rare, and this example is particularly noteworthy. It originates from Potsdam, one of the most important secondary residences of the Prussian royal family and later the German Imperial Household. Even rarer are pieces that, according to tradition, come from the imperial court environment. This bonnet is said to have belonged to a lady‑in‑waiting of Empress Augusta of Saxe‑Weimar‑Eisenach, the consort of Emperor Wilhelm I.
Around 1880, Wilhelm I resided frequently in Potsdam, which served as his preferred place of stay and a central stage of late 19th‑century Prussian court life.
The bonnet is made of crêpe de Chine, with a paper‑printed maker’s label on the inside and a chin strap with a large bow. For its age, it is preserved in very good condition, making it a rare and desirable example of royal‑associated German millinery.
