We adore striped gowns, and this exquisite example — originating from England — is a particularly striking survival of early 1770s fashion. This two piece silk taffeta robe à l’anglaise is warp‑printed with pink and green stripes set against a lemon‑yellow ground, further enriched by smaller horizontal stripes and vertical pink chevrons. The fitted bodice features a charming pinked pleated trim at the neckline and a close‑fitting back, lined in linen, typical of mid‑18th‑century English dressmaking.

The skirt includes pocket slits and internal ribbon ties for wearing en retroussée, a fashionable arrangement that allowed the overskirt to be looped up for volume and movement. The matching petticoat is equally refined, finished with a wide pinked‑edge frill at the hem and additional pocket slits — a hallmark of robe à l’anglaise construction.

Condition

Overall, the ensemble is in generally good to very good condition. Alterations are minimal and were made during the 18th century:

  • the waist was slightly let out,

  • the front opening of the skirt was marginally widened,

  • the bodice front was gently adjusted.

There is perspiration staining to the bodice lining, which caused silk shattering and fading at the underarms. The skirt shows small marks, dye run, and a few minor areas of silk thinning, but no major shattering. Two internal ribbon ties are missing. The petticoat remains in good condition, with only minor snags and a few small damp speckles — no significant alterations.

This robe à l’anglaise is an exceptional example of 18th‑century striped silk fashion, combining vibrant colour, sophisticated textile design and elegant tailoring.
