Striped Summer Dress for a Juvenile, England, ca. 1858

This charming four-piece antique summer dress for a young lady, dating from the 1850s, is a rare survivor of its kind. Originating from England, the ensemble includes a skirt, overskirt/apron, bodice, and belt — all crafted from a delicate striped crepe-like fabric in soft pink and white tones. The textile’s airy quality and gentle color palette reflect the seasonal elegance typical of Victorian summer fashion.

The bodice and overskirt are adorned with gathered ruffles and rosettes, adding a romantic flair to the garment. The sleeves are cut in the distinctive pagoda style, flaring gracefully at the elbow — a hallmark of mid-19th century dressmaking. The overskirt/apron adds volume and texture, while the belt cinches the waist to emphasize the youthful silhouette.

Summer dresses from the 1850s were designed not only for comfort in warmer weather but also to reflect the lighter, more playful aesthetic of the season. Unlike formal gowns made of heavy silks or satins, Victorian summer dresses often featured breathable fabrics like cotton, muslin, or light crepe, and were decorated with modest trims rather than elaborate embellishments. Surviving examples of summer dresses from the 19th century are exceedingly rare — and those made for adolescent girls are rarer still, as they were often worn hard and discarded as the wearer grew.

This particular dress is in moderate to good condition. There are areas of fabric wear, where the material appears lighter due to age and use, but the structure and decorative elements remain intact. It stands as a beautiful and authentic representation of Victorian youth fashion, offering insight into the everyday elegance of a young woman’s wardrobe in the mid-1800s.
