A Historic Glimpse into Time: Victorian Wool Travel Ensemble, Germany, ca. 1898
This distinguished ladies’ travel coat from circa 1898 is a rare testament to the elegance and practicality of late Victorian outerwear. Originating from Germany, the antique coat is crafted from fine brown wool and tailored for seasonal journeys—likely worn in late autumn or winter. Its front closure features twenty polished spherical buttons made from exotic wood, adding a refined natural accent. Two functional pockets on either side offered space for essentials, while additional buttons at the cuffs and three more at the back - where the pleats of the modest train begin - enhance both form and detail.
Inside, the antique coat is lined with warm brown lambswool and trimmed with color-coordinated satin ribbons around the button areas. Though the satin shows signs of wear, the overall condition of the coat remains remarkably well preserved. Accompanying the coat is its original wool cape, also lined with satin, designed to provide extra protection against rain and snow. The cape’s satin lining, like that of the coat, bears the gentle marks of time.
What makes this ensemble truly exceptional is the inclusion of its matching travel bag - a rarity in surviving Victorian garments. Made of sturdy linen, the bag features leather handles and is embroidered on one side with a red floral motif, while the other bears the cheerful inscription “Gute Reise” (“Safe travels”). A side pocket and drawstring closures at both ends complete its functional design. The antique bag, too, is in very good condition, with only light signs of age and use.
