With the introduction of the automobile in the late 19th century, clothing styles began to change. Women who had the privilege of owning or driving a car needed practical yet stylish clothing. Fashion had to fulfill the need for both comfort and protection from the elements. The typical attire for a ride in an automobile often included a sturdy yet elegant dress, hat and dust veil. Today we are pleased to present such an ensemble. Automobile ensemble, ca. 1904, origin: Europe. Unique ensemble consisting of a plaid wool dress, a hat, a dust veil, a blouse with bow tie, a brown leather bag and brown leather boots. The antique dress is a two-piece consisting of a tight-fitting jacket and a skirt with a small train. Underneath is a khaki-colored blouse decorated with a bow tie. Front closure with buttons, long sleeves. In excellent condition. Slight soiling at the hem. A stain in the waist area of the skirt; very few, very small stains. Under the jacket is a linen shirt decorated with a bow tie. In very good to excellent condition. The hat is made of red, yellow and black straw. Brown silk hatband. The hat is fastened to pinned-up hair with hat pins. Flowers are attached to the underside of a matching color fabric. In very good condition. The dust veil made of brown cotton fabric has been preserved to match the hat. The ensemble is completed by a brown leather handbag and suede lace-up boots. Both are in good condition. Such an ensemble not only offers a fascinating insight into the history of fashion, but also into the social norms and lifestyles of the time. It bears witness to the careful craftsmanship and attention to detail that were valued in the fashion of the era. The combination of practicality and fashion was essential to meet the demands of the new mobility. The garments reflected the elegance and status of the wearer while remaining functional for long car journeys. Such historical outfits are a valuable treasure today, documenting the development of fashion and the change in lifestyle as technology progressed.
