This rare flapper cape by Marshall Field & Company, Chicago, from the 1920s, is an exceptional example of Art Deco fashion and the luxurious textiles associated with flapper era clothing. Crafted from fine dark blue silk and designed with a graceful capelet or hood, it features a buttoned drop waist accented by long, fluid silk fringe, creating the dynamic movement characteristic of Jazz Age evening wear. The interior reveals a vibrant Art Deco floral silk chiffon print, a hallmark of 1920s textile design. In very good to excellent condition, the cape shows only a small loss at the neck, a tiny tear, and minimal surface wear, all consistent with careful preservation.
With provenance from David Moses, NJ, antiques collector, the piece carries additional historical significance. Produced by Marshall Field & Company, one of America’s most influential luxury department stores shaped by the pioneering retail magnate Marshall Field, this garment embodies the refined craftsmanship and cultural sophistication of 1920s evening fashion and stands as a rare surviving artifact of Chicago’s iconic fashion history.
