These elegant antique white Chevreau leather shoes, originating from America and dating to the 1860s, are a beautifully preserved example of mid‑Victorian footwear. Antique shoe decorations became especially fashionable during this decade, drawing inspiration from 18th‑century styles. The distinctive Chevreau leather bows on the instep reflect this revival and help to date the shoes with precision: such bow‑trimmed shoes first appeared in 1863 and had largely disappeared again by 1870.
Crafted from soft, high‑quality Chevreau leather, the shoes feature a small wooden heel covered in matching leather - an elegant detail typical of refined American shoemaking of the period. Their clean, sculptural silhouette and decorative bows embody the transitional aesthetic between early Victorian formality and the lighter, more decorative trends of the later 19th century.
The shoes are well preserved, especially considering their fragile materials. They show minor stains and age‑appropriate wear, nothing unusual for footwear of this era. One heel has a small defect in the leather, but this does not detract from their rarity or display value.
A finely crafted and historically significant example of 1860s women’s footwear, ideal for collectors of Victorian shoes, historic textiles, and museum‑quality accessories.
