Chatelaines have a long and varied history dating back to the Middle Ages. The term "chatelaine" is derived from the French word for the mistress of a castle and originally referred to a bundle of keys carried by housekeepers. Over time, the chatelaine evolved into a fashionable accessory to which, in addition to keys, other useful items such as scissors, writing utensils, and eventually, eyeglasses were attached.

Chatelaine glasses were developed to facilitate the practical use of eyeglasses, especially for women who needed them regularly in everyday life. These special accessories were worn on the belt and thus ensured that the glasses were always within easy reach.

The chatelaine glasses described here, dating from around 1890, is made of leather, which ensures durability and a certain degree of flexibility. The metal rim gives the accessory additional stability and a sophisticated appearance. The chain and clip, made of white metal, are functional and aesthetically pleasing.
