A Russet-Brown Cannelé Silk Robe à l’Anglaise, circa 1775

From the gentle shimmer of ribbed silk to the sculpted grace of its silhouette, this robe whispers of candlelit evenings, whispered courtly intrigues, and a woman’s quiet command of elegance in 18th-century society.

Woven in a warm russet-brown hue, the silk catches light with every movement, emphasizing the artistry of the cut. At the back, four meticulously pleated panels draw the eye to a low, tapering center, echoing the refined tastes of the Georgian era. The bodice - cut with rare ingenuity - features a curved cross-over front that embraces the wearer’s form with understated allure. Seamless side and front panels glide toward a skirt with a gentle train, its flow suggestive of measured steps across parquet floors.

Hidden side slits offer access to pockets concealed beneath the skirt - intimate spaces for personal tokens and secrets untold. The fitted sleeves, the slight sweep of the hem, and the included lace fichu and cuffs complete an ensemble made not for fleeting fashion, but for memory.

  • Bust: Approx. 81 cm (32 inches)

  • Included: A delicate lace fichu and matching cuffs, befitting a lady of refined taste

  • Additional Notes: The brooch, of later date, stands apart and is offered with other jewels - perhaps as a modern echo of the gown’s quiet opulence

  • Provenance: English Collection, once treasured and preserved through generations
