Black Pearl Purse, ca. 1890

A pearl bag lavishly embroidered with metal beads. Bags of this type were worn when attending the theater or the opera. A handkerchief, opera glasses, a scent bottle, and other small items fit inside. A hanging tassel made of metal beads. A metal chain for fastening and carrying. Very well preserved. A very few metal beads have developed surface rust.

These artfully crafted bags were not only fashion accessories, but also an expression of social status and taste. Each bead was carefully embroidered by hand, demonstrating the craftsmanship and effort that went into their production. Such bags were often displayed by wealthy ladies to demonstrate their wealth and sophistication.
