At first, Howard Carter could see nothing. The candle flickered strongly in the draught of air escaping from the burial chamber - air that had been trapped in the chamber for over 3000 years. When the flame calmed down again, Carter lifted the candle a little higher and pushed it through the opening in the wall. For long, agonizing moments, nothing happened. Finally Lord Carnarvon could stand it no longer. “What do you see?” he asked breathlessly. And Carter replied very calmly: “I see wonderful things!” (from the “Spiegel” of 26.11.2012). Tutankhamun's tomb was found in 1922. This sensational find triggered an incredible “Egyptophile wave”. The find was echoed in art, literature, everyday objects and even fashion. This unique coat is a good example of this. It comes from an English collection and was probably made and worn around 1924. Sphinxes, pyramids, Nile lilies, scarab beetles, Horus falcons and Egyptians have been sewn onto the cream-colored silk base fabric as appliqués. The coat is in very good condition. Somewhat stained. Natural colors appear to have been used for the fabric appliqués. The red and green areas have “leaked” a little in very few places - probably after contact with water. Signs of wear on the collar. The decoration is not included. The coat deserves the rating “museum quality” from us.
