These rare antique handmade sample shoes from England, dating to the 1870s, are an exceptional example of Victorian shoemaking craftsmanship. They bear the gold‑embossed manufacturer’s label: Jesse Thompson • 113 Main Street • Bingley, a reference to the historic town of Bingley in West Yorkshire.
Sample or pattern shoes of this type were produced for traveling merchants, who carried them from town to town - often into rural areas - to present the latest shoe fashions to their clientele. Because they were made in small numbers and handled frequently, surviving examples are extremely rare.
These sample shoes are crafted from leather and fasten with three buttons each, reflecting the fashionable styles of the period. On the leather sole, the imprint “La Duchesse” appears, adding another layer of historical interest.
The shoes are very well preserved, with only some scuff marks on the leather sole, entirely expected for antique samples that were handled rather than worn.
A highly collectible and historically significant example of Victorian footwear marketing, ideal for enthusiasts of antique shoes, 19th‑century craftsmanship, and museum‑quality fashion artifacts.
