This rare Empire‑period reception dress, dating to ca. 1805–1810 and originating from France, is an exceptional example of early 19th‑century Neoclassical fashion. Made in the characteristic classical style of the Napoleonic era, the dress features a finely constructed bodice with an internal cotton lining, ensuring the elegant, high‑waisted silhouette typical of the period.
The dress has long sleeves trimmed with a delicate lace border, with the same lace accenting the collar. The neckline can be adjusted and tightened with original drawstrings, a common feature of early Empire gowns. The skirt falls in the slightly pronounced bell shape associated with reception and formal dresses of this era. It is pleated at the back and attached to the bodice as an “apron skirt” using strings. The cords and some cotton elements were likely renewed at a later date.
Entirely hand‑sewn with remarkable craftsmanship, the dress shows only small stains and minor abrasions in the silk, consistent with its age. The decorative accessories shown in images are not included.
A highly desirable piece for collectors of Empire fashion, early 19th‑century textiles, and museum‑quality antique clothing, this dress represents a rare opportunity to acquire an authentic garment from the French Empire period.
