Nightgowns at the end of the 19th century were anything but plain and simple. They were elaborately designed, beautifully decorated and looked more like dresses. This one is one of those. The dress is made from a thin cotton fabric and decorated with lace (as a collar, on the sleeves and as inlays). Two silk ties at the waist. In good to very good condition.
In this era, it was customary for nightwear to be not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. Society attached great importance to elegance and grace, even in the most intimate moments. The fine cotton fabric ensured that they were comfortable to wear, while the elaborate lace decorations reflected the craftsmanship of the time.
Such nightgowns were often presented as gifts on special occasions such as weddings or anniversaries. They symbolized not only security and affection, but also an appreciation for the finer details of life. Over the years, the designs and materials have changed, but the charm and elegance of the historic nightgowns remain unforgotten.
