Made around 1885, this antique winter visiting dress represents the opulence and style of the late 19th century. It is a three-piece ensemble made of French blue silk velvet that captivates with its artful use of contrasting colors and material details. With its sophisticated design and meticulous workmanship, this dress was created for social occasions and elegant visits.
The main color of the ensemble, a deep French blue, contrasts harmoniously with the accentuating silk velvet stripes in burgundy, grey and rust. Between the stripes are filigree silk fillet stripes that give the design an additional dimension and elegance. This combination of colors and textures underlines the luxurious aesthetic of the garment and makes it an eye-catcher.
The bodice of the dress is an example of craftsmanship and attention to detail. It features dimensional metal buttons with an imitation marcasite center and dyed mother-of-pearl buttons on the inside. These buttons give the bodice a special sophistication. The front part was subsequently widened and offset, indicating adjustments to optimize the fit. The bodice shows some signs of wear - including a small tear at the bottom right of the sleeve, a poorly sewn seam on the back and in the collar area as well as slight discoloration on the right cuff.
The dolman, a typical top from Victorian fashion, is decorated with dyed marabou feather trim and an oxidized clasp that was added later. These details give the dress an extravagant touch. Minor damage, such as a small tear on the right forearm, minimal seam openings and light stains.
The floor-length skirt completes the ensemble and shows slight wear and minor bruising on the velvet. A few small tears and color changes are also visible, including a three-centimeter opening at the waistband and a few one-centimeter-long tears.
Overall, the winter visiting dress is remarkably well preserved, especially considering its age and the wealth of detail. While the bodice is classified as “good” (probably modified), the dolman and skirt are in “very good” condition. Slight signs of wear and minor damage testify to its use and lend the dress a historical authenticity. The decoration is not included.
