Antique Victorian Paisley Dolman, ca. 1880 – A Tapestry of Elegance and Heritage

This remarkable Victorian dolman from around 1880 is a masterwork of textile artistry and social symbolism. Woven from wool in a richly detailed paisley pattern, it reflects the era’s fascination with exotic motifs and the transformation of luxurious shawls into fashionable outerwear. The antique dolman - an elegant hybrid of cape and coat - was designed to complement the bustle silhouette, draping gracefully in front while hugging the back to accentuate the sculpted lines of the skirt beneath.

Inspired by the military garments of Hungarian hussars and Ottoman dolamans, this style became a hallmark of upper-class fashion. It required no freedom of movement, making it ideal for social visits and promenades - garments of presence rather than practicality.

Design Details:

  • Chenille fringe trims the edges, adding texture and movement.

  • Maize-blossom rosettes crafted from cord adorn the back, while looped cord embellishments grace both sides.

  • Short sleeves with velvet cuffs offer a refined contrast.

  • Interior lining of deep red silk enhances the richness of the garment.

  • Hook-and-eye closure ensures a discreet and elegant fastening.

Measurements:

Front length: ~ 195 cm
Back length: ~ 75 cm
Shoulder width: ~ 38 cm

Provenance: Released from the holdings of an American museum, this antique dolman is in excellent condition - a rare survivor of its kind, preserving the grace and grandeur of Victorian society in every stitch.
