A Spitalfields Brocaded Silk Robe à l’Anglaise, ca. 1770 - A Portrait of English Elegance

This captivating Robe à l’Anglaise from circa 1770 showcases the refined artistry of Spitalfields silk weaving. The brocaded textile is adorned with delicate ivory foliate trails and gently scattered floral sprigs in shades of pink and green, evoking the romantic sensibilities of Georgian fashion.

The gown’s fitted back is structured with precise knife pleats that taper elegantly to the rear waist, creating a sculptural silhouette. Sleeves are styled with curved elbow openings, subtly edged in pinked ribbons made from the same silk - an understated touch that reveals the maker’s attention to harmony in detail. The sleeves are decorated with beautiful 18th century lace cuffs. The closed bodice tapers gracefully into a curved point at the waist, marrying structure with softness.

Beneath the skirt lie pocket slits. Skirt from the 18th century, quilted. The skirt is fastened with strings on both sides. In good condition. Subtle stains. With a bust measurement of approximately 86 cm (34 inches), the gown was designed for a refined figure, likely worn for formal occasions at court or salon. The jewelry is not included.

Provenance: From an elaborate English collection, this gown stands as a testament to the elegance and technical brilliance of late 18th-century textile craftsmanship.
