This exquisite robe à la française from around 1765 is a radiant testament to Rococo fashion and refined craftsmanship. Made from silk in subtle ivory tones fading to pale grey, it features a closed-front bodice adorned with pinked and pierced ribbons of matching silk, and fastened with silk-covered buttons. The front skirt is richly decorated with elaborate oval furbelows that cascade downward in ornamental folds, while the engageants - double-layered sleeves of silk - are finished with perforated, scalloped edges and further enhanced by three graduated layers of fine lawn fabric. A delicate lawn frill lines the inside of the neckline, adding softness to the silhouette.

From the back, broad box pleats fall gracefully from the neckline, forming the trained skirt with elegant side slits that allowed access to inner pockets or panniers. The matching petticoat mirrors the gown’s embellishments, featuring pierced scalloped furbelows and bands of pinked ribbon. Though delicately aged, the garment remains in very good condition, bearing only signs of wear such as underarm staining and discrete adhesive strips in the sleeve area. A few stains and a few very smal holes. The skirt has been professionally restored at the waist, preserving its historical integrity.

With a bust circumference of approximately 76 cm (30 inches), this gown likely belonged to a woman of petite stature, perhaps gracing her figure at courtly gatherings or formal affairs. Originating from an elaborate English collection, the dress speaks volumes of its aristocratic past - an enduring symbol of elegance, social prestige, and the theatrical splendor of 18th-century fashion.
