A superb example of Empire-period fashion, this figured silk sarsanet evening gown, dating to circa 1810, embodies the neoclassical elegance that defined women’s clothing between 1800 and 1815. Inspired by the aesthetics of ancient Greece and Rome, the gown features a graceful high waistline just beneath the bust, with cross-over bodice panels and gentle gathers at the back, creating a soft, column-like silhouette.

Crafted from lightweight silk sarsanet—a fabric known for its delicate motifs and subtle sheen—the gown is paired with silk satin to enhance texture and contrast. The empire waistline is accented with a ribbon band, while the neckline fastens at the rear with buttons. Long sleeves end in slightly flared cuffs, and the hem is trimmed with a plush band in yellow and ivory tones, adding a refined touch of color.

The gown is in excellent condition, with a bust measurement of approx. 81 cm (32 inches). Included is a 19th-century brooch (likely younger than the dress itself), and a matching Empire blouse featuring a high standing collar and a back closure with hooks, eyes, and a ribbon tie—also beautifully preserved.

This rare Empire-era ensemble offers a glimpse into the post-Revolutionary shift in fashion, where natural beauty, grace, and refined restraint replaced the ornate excesses of the previous century. Ideal for collectors of Regency fashion, antique textiles, or museum-quality historical garments.
