This Edwardian evening dress, dating to around 1908, is a rare and exquisite example of early 20th-century couture fashion. The gown features a high neckline and a front panel of crochet lace, framed by elegant painted silk panels on either side. These silk bands are sewn to form a soft V-shape in the front, while extending into a winged effect at the back, enhanced by a beaded overlay and delicate fringe detailing.
Below the waist, the design alternates between painted silk panels and crochet lace inserts, creating a harmonious interplay of texture and movement. The crochet lace sleeves are topped with a nearly capulet-style overlace, adding a romantic silhouette. Throughout the garment, silk satin ribbon detailing is applied to the lace panels, and the dress is fully lined in silk satin.
The painted silk panels are most likely of French origin, and while the dress is unlabelled, the refined combination of materials and sophisticated construction suggest it was created in a European atelier, possibly for an American clientele seeking custom couture evening wear.
