This rare Edwardian mourning hat, dating to the early 20th century, is a poignant and beautifully preserved example of historic widow’s attire, crafted from the distinctive crinkly “crape anglaise” fabric - a material specifically used for mourning garments, with its spelling (“crape” rather than “crepe”) denoting its solemn purpose.
The hat features an original tulle veil, still attached, and is adorned with black wooden applications, adding depth and texture to its austere silhouette. Inside, a label from Vienna reads: Marie Gartner – Modes – Wien – XVII. Calvarienberggasse 53, linking the piece to a known Austrian milliner of the period.
In very good condition, with only minor damage to the tulle at the top, the hat retains its structural integrity and emotional resonance. It is a rare survivor of Edwardian mourning fashion, ideal for collectors of antique headwear, mourning memorabilia, or museum-quality fashion artifacts.
