This two-piece antique ensemble, dating to circa 1895, is a striking example of Victorian American fashion, originating from the holdings of an American museum collection. It consists of a black silk dress and a matching black velvet coat, both showcasing the refined craftsmanship and silhouette typical of late 19th-century women's attire.
The dress is made from black floral jacquard silk, composed of a bodice and skirt. The bodice features dramatic leg-of-mutton sleeves - a hallmark of 1890s fashion—and a waist belt accented with a bow. The back-gathered skirt creates a modest train that remains practical for walking. The interior is structured with hook-and-eye fastenings, and the unlined skirt is trimmed with velvet along the hem. Condition is good to very good, with minor discoloration at the neckline, underarm marks, and a few missing buttons and fasteners. Small tears are present at the hemline.
Measurements:
Bust: approx. 82 cm
Waist: approx. 58 cm
Length: approx. 145 cm
The accompanying Victorian black velvet coat is lined with gold silk, featuring a center closure with hidden hook-and-eye fastenings, boning at the waist, and an interior pocket. It is in very good condition, with its original lining and structure beautifully preserved.
Length: approx. 95 cm
This rare 1895 Victorian silk dress and velvet coat ensemble is ideal for collectors of antique clothing, museum-quality fashion, or American textile history, offering a tangible link to the elegance and silhouette artistry of the Gilded Age.
