This magnificent two‑piece aubergine‑colored silk visiting gown, dating to around 1889, is a rare and beautifully preserved example of late Victorian fashion. Labeled (Madame) Percy, this ensemble represents the refined craftsmanship of a dressmaker whose surviving works are exceptionally scarce - known today only from a single institution: The Museum at FIT, New York.

The gown captivates with its striking circular lace collar, executed in an elaborate Renaissance‑style design. Equally distinctive are the sleeves interrupted by lace inserts, creating a sophisticated interplay of texture and transparency. At the neckline, the front is arranged in small, carefully constructed lappets, adding depth and elegance to the bodice.

A colored satin ribbon belt, fastened with small rhinestone buckles, accentuates the waist. The contrasting silk continues as a wide decorative band along the back of the skirt and into the dramatic train, enhancing the garment’s visual impact. The skirt is pleated at the hem, giving it structure and movement characteristic of the late 1880s silhouette.

The gown is in very good condition, with age‑appropriate imperfections: half of the waistband is missing, as is half of the original label; a few small holes appear in the skirt. These minor flaws do not detract from the rarity or display value of this exceptional piece. Decorative items shown in photographs are not included.

A highly collectible example of Victorian visiting attire, ideal for enthusiasts of antique silk gowns, historic textiles, and museum‑quality fashion - made even more desirable by its connection to the elusive dressmaker Madame Percy.
