Biarritz, the elegant seaside resort on the Basque coast of southwestern France, rose to fame in the 19th century when members of the European aristocracy transformed the former fishing village into a fashionable destination. This extravagant late 19th‑century ball gown was very likely worn at one of the glittering soirées that defined Biarritz’s social life. It is a breathtaking creation in peach‑coloured silk, made by Larue · Bordeaux‑Biarritz, a name associated with refined regional couture.

The bodice features a rounded neckline edged with pearls, with a pleated bust and back that create the sculpted silhouette typical of the era. Suspended ribbed silk straps, trimmed with glass‑pin and glass‑bead appliqués, add movement and sparkle. A wide belt defines the waist, while the short sleeves are decorated with delicate lace. The skirt falls into a long train, and its front panel is richly adorned with lace and matching gold and pearl‑coloured appliqués, echoing the opulence of fin‑de‑siècle evening wear.

The gown is excellently preserved, with only minor details requiring attention: the folded belt needs to be re‑shaped and secured, and a few glass beads are likely missing. The decoration shown in some images (including the fan) is not included.
