This striking two‑piece reception dress, dating to around 1896, is a true highlight of late Victorian fashion. Its appearance is remarkably fresh, and the extraordinary color palette makes it an unforgettable example of high‑quality English dressmaking. The gown comes from an English collection, adding to its historical appeal.
The base fabric is a woven gray silk patterned with navy blue flowers reminiscent of elderflowers. The bodice, the dramatic large gigot sleeves, and the front panel of the skirt are crafted from rich royal blue silk, overlaid with machine‑made lace that enhances the garment’s depth and texture. A high collar and the characteristic implied bust support reflect the fashionable silhouette of the mid‑1890s.
Decorative blue appliqués with small hanging pompoms add playful movement to the design. The bodice is lined with glazed cotton, while the skirt is lined with light‑colored cotton for structure. The hem features a wide border trimmed with lace, giving the skirt a refined finish.
The dress is in very good condition, with only subtle signs of age: faint underarm stains hidden beneath the large sleeves, a few light marks, slight wear at the center‑back hem, and minor interior staining on the bodice. These imperfections are minimal and do not detract from the gown’s impressive visual impact. Decorative items shown in photographs are not included.
A rare and beautifully preserved example of Victorian reception attire, ideal for collectors of antique silk gowns, historic textiles, and museum‑quality 19th‑century fashion.
