Rare handmade sample shoes from England, 1870s. Gold embossed manufacturer's label: Jesse Thompson * 113 Main Street * Bingley. Bingley is a town in England. Pattern shoes were made for traveling merchants so they could present the latest shoe fashions to their clientele, often in the countryside. These sample shoes are made of leather; they are closed with three buttons each. Printed on the leather sole: La Duchesse. Very well preserved. Some scuff marks on the leather sole.
