This exquisite visiting dress from the Biedermeier period (Germany) or the Romantic period (England) is a rare and authentic example of mid-19th century fashion. Worn in England around 1847, the antique dress is a two-piece ensemble consisting of a one-piece gown and a matching cape.

Crafted from luxurious silk brocade fabric in purple, black, and white, with purple as the dominant color, the textile itself is a highlight of the piece. The cape and sleeves are adorned with small triangular appliqués attached to decorative ribbons, adding a refined touch to the overall design.

The cape is pulled over the head and features a pleated train that extends to the waist. The dress has long sleeves that flare slightly at the cuffs and a round neckline. This is a finely constructed example of an 1840s dress, showcasing the era’s signature silhouette. A standout detail is the even cartridge pleating at the waist, which, combined with the elongated waistline and V-shaped bust, creates the quintessential style of the period. The skirt is pleated at the waist and falls in a bell shape, supported by layered underskirts worn one atop the other.

The female silhouette of the mid-19th century was defined by a fitted corseted bodice and wide full skirts. These conical skirts evolved from the Empire silhouette of the 1830s, with its high waistline, into the bell-shaped forms of the 1840s, and eventually into the bustle styles of the late 1860s. Initially supported by multiple petticoats, the skirts later relied on graduated hoop underskirts made from materials such as baleen, cane, and metal. This structural innovation allowed the textiles to stand out, with expansive surfaces and minimal excess trim.

The dress is in very good to excellent condition. A few seams are open but can be easily repaired. This is a truly authentic antique garment that has both delighted and impressed us. Given the quality of the fabric and craftsmanship, it must have cost a fortune in 1847.
