These rare French mules, dating to circa 1796, are an exquisite example of Directoire-era footwear, reflecting the neoclassical elegance that defined late 18th-century fashion. Influenced by the rediscovery of Pompeii and Herculaneum, the Directoire style embraced clear shapes, flowing fabrics, and short heels reminiscent of Roman sandals—a tribute to antiquity reimagined for modern sophistication.
Crafted from green and yellow striped silk with a leaf motif, the design is further enriched by red-bordered stripes, silk bows with small buckles, and a gold-colored wire mesh trim that adds subtle shimmer. The insole and heel are covered in white leather, while the brown sole remains intact and structurally sound. Measuring approx. 22.5 cm in sole length, the mules are excellently preserved, with their original materials and detailing beautifully maintained. Please note: decorative items shown in some images are not included.
This rare pair of Directoire silk mules is ideal for collectors of antique shoes, French Revolutionary fashion, or museum-quality textile artifacts, offering a graceful and historically rich glimpse into the classical revival and artisanal finesse of 1790s France.
