This antique Victorian printed cotton sunbonnet, dating to around 1900, is made of charming lightweight printed fabric and features a wide, beautifully quilted brim that provides both structure and sun protection. The broad stitched shield at the front is carefully quilted rather than ruched, giving the bonnet a practical, durable character typical of Victorian rural clothing. The back neck curtain is left smooth, designed to shield the wearer from sunlight during outdoor work or market days.

This type of bonnet was most likely worn by a working‑class woman or a farmer’s wife at the weekly market, which makes it particularly rare today. Everyday utilitarian garments were often used until worn out and then discarded once they fell out of fashion, so surviving examples in good condition are uncommon. The printed cotton has retained much of its colour and pattern, and the quilting remains intact.

With its wide quilted brim, practical construction and decorative printed fabric, this bonnet is a beautiful example of Victorian utilitarian millinery and offers a rare glimpse into the daily clothing of women whose garments seldom survived. It stands as an authentic piece of handmade antique Victoriana and a wearable fragment of millinery history.
