This antique Victorian pink cotton sunbonnet, dating to around 1900, is made of soft cotton and features a beautifully quilted brim with fine, hand‑stitched gathering that creates a subtle textured effect. The small front shield is neatly quilted rather than ruched, giving the bonnet a structured, practical appearance. The back neck curtain, designed to protect the wearer from sunlight, is likewise left smooth and functional — a typical feature of Victorian rural clothing.

This type of bonnet was most likely worn by a working‑class woman or a farmer’s wife at the weekly market, which makes it particularly rare today. Everyday utilitarian garments were often used until worn out and then discarded once they fell out of fashion, so surviving examples are uncommon. The bonnet is preserved in good condition, with the colour and stitching still intact.

With its handmade construction, charming pink tone and practical design, this piece represents a wonderful example of Victorian utilitarian millinery and offers a glimpse into the clothing of ordinary women whose garments rarely survived. It remains a delightful piece of handmade antique Victoriana and a wearable fragment of millinery history.
